Rep. Buck McKeon Fights For Jobs, Against Employee Free Choice Act

Three cheers for Rep. Buck McKeon, who writes in The Hill:

[The Employee Free Choice Act] is a proposal that could organize workers against their wishes and impose a contract that neither workers nor management approved. Its reach could extend to businesses as small as a dozen workers or fewer, driving up the cost and complexity of doing business.

If the question is how to keep and create jobs in this country, the answer is to start by rejecting policies that would destroy them.

New Ad Warns of Lost Jobs Due To Employee Free Choice Act

Another great one from the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace, of which Associated Builders and Contractors is a member.

Card Check Cost: $1.75 Billion (or More!)

The Hill has a must-read story on the real reason union officials are so desperate to pass the misnamed, anti-democratic, job-killing Employee Free Choice Act:

Passing the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) would result in millions in additional political funds for organized labor over the next 10 years, a business group opposed to the legislation will argue in a report to be released Tuesday.

Unions would stand to gain an additional $320 million to spend on political activities in year 10 alone with a 10-year total of $1.75 billion, according to a report put together by the anti-EFCA Workforce Fairness Institute (WFI).

That’s hundreds of millions more pumping into politicians controlled by organized labor. It’s $1.75 billion out of workers’ paychecks. But don’t forget: the real cost of EFCA could be 600,000-5 million lost jobs, according to an economic impact study released this year (and available to the right-hand side of this blog –>).

UPDATE: Shopfloor adds this thought on the job losses we mentioned:

Yesterday President Barack Obama announced at a Cabinet meeting that he plans to accelerate spending for the $787 billion stimulus plan to create or save 600,000 jobs over the next 100 days. However, it is a bit concerning the President has also previously expressed support for the jobs-killing Employee Free Choice Act that will destroy 600,000 jobs in the first year after enactment. One step forward, one step back.

A recent academic study by Dr. Layne-Ferrar shows that if union leaders

Small Biz Expert: Employee Free Choice Act “not free, won’t help employees”

Be sure to check out Jim Blasingame’s article on the threats the Employee Free Choice Act poses to small businesses. In short, he argues:

If the EFCA (aka Card Check) becomes law, the following year I will be forced to make this prediction: Many small businesses will make one of three unnatural management decisions if pushed to unionize due to EFCA: 1) move more jobs off-shore; 2) limit growth to stay under the number of employees that EFCA allows; or 3) just close up, rather than prolong the inevitable experience of GM and Chrysler.

McDonnell’s Use of Card Check Draws Political Attention

We’ve been following Virginia gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell’s references to card check and right to work laws to distinguish himself from his potential opponents. It seems to be working. After all, one of his opponents downright resents being forced to take a stand.

Luckily, the issue continues to catch the interest of reporters. The latest to notice is Reid Wilson of The Hill, who writes: “At a time when Virginia, like the rest of the nation, is hemorrhaging jobs, McDonnell casts card check as bad for businesses that need all the help they can get to begin rehiring employees.”

Card Check: Making A Murky Future

Michael Reagan has a great article over at LogisticsMgmt.com, where he reports on an informative lunch:

During the questions and comments portion of the event, the CEO of a very successful company stood up and shared some facts, thoughts and comments that left the group speechless. His main theme was that at this moment, he has no idea (and neither do our politicians) how much the Waxman Markey Cap and Trade legislation will cost this country, or his business. (In fact, Rep Waxman acknowledged recently that he hadn
