Card Check: He Loves It, He Loves It Not

The AP is reporting the local and International Teamsters bodies are split over the endorsement of a North Carolina Democratic Senatorial candidate who’s position on the Employee Free Choice Act is about as mirky as the bill is troubling (for beginners, that’s a lot).

What was the offensive statement that got Cal Cunningham’s union support pulled? He told the AP “I support elections. I think that what we’re about to see emerge from the Senate, if anything, protects elections as the sole way for there to be unions created. That’s something that I would support.”

That seems pretty reasonable to us, and it suggests a union official who doesn’t think that is good enough has an agenda that needs to seriously be examined.

Teamsters Look To Build New “Army” Of Organizers

We don’t know. It just sounds a little … aggressive. The Teamsters union is looking to add 1,000 organizers after the labor organization supposes passage of the Employee Free Choice Act. (In the past, Teamsters president James Hoffa has guestimated that the bill could double the union’s size).

But consider the language used for the pitch — “The Mighty Army of Teamster Organizers Wants You.” Army seems a bit much. And it most certainly feeds into concerns that overly “aggressive” union organizers will not be gentle as they try to “convince” employees to sign a union authorization card and to forego those pesky private ballot-elections.

Card Check: Follow The Money

You might not know it (but probably have an inkling) that the Teamsters have some pensions that are so bad there are companies willing to pay billions of dollars just to get out of the plans and then still pay their obligations to retired employees. Talk about a ringing non-endorsement.

Anywho, it’s worth remembering when you read that the Teamsters are trying to use the Employee Free Choice Act to temporarily fix their broken plans at the expense of workers’ rights, private ballots, and a healthy free enterprise system.
